Arrest Made in the Murder of Bonnie Wheeler Neighbors

More than 46 years ago, a woman from Benson, North Carolina, was killed by a then unknown attacker. Her infant son was found beside her, cold but still alive.

This year, authorities made an arrest in the murder of Bonnie Wheeler Neighbors.

Bonnie’s Life

In 1972, Bonnie was 33 years old. She made a comfortable home for her family, which included a husband and two sons. One child was 7 years old and her baby was just a few months old. Family members described Bonnie as caring and passionate about her family and church.

On December 14, Bonnie’s life was seemingly not much different from any other day. She left her home in her station wagon to pick up her son from school, the younger child with her. She would never arrive at the school.

Instead, authorities found Bonnie’s car alongside Market Street the next day. No trace of Bonnie or her son was evident.

The Terrible Discovery

For three days, Benson community members looked for Bonnie. For three days, authorities searched for her and instructed locals to look for signs of Bonnie or her son on their land.
