Five Misconceptions about Working From Home

When I tell people that I work from home, I often get a reaction like, “Wow, I could do that!” Of course, it’s really easy to overlook the fact that freelancing means you have to find your own clients, find your own health insurance, and be motivated to work each morning.

I hear plenty of other misconceptions about working from home. Let’s clear the air about some of these myths.

Misconception #1: You don’t actually have to work very much.

Yes, I do have control over my own schedule, but in some ways working from home requires a lot more motivation to get to work. Sometimes I have to work longer hours to meet my goals, especially if I need to take a day off. There is no vacation pay. There is no paid time off.

I also have trouble “switching off” some days. It’s hard to feel like I’m done for the day, especially because I always feel like there is something more I can do at the end of the day. It can create a lot of anxiety because I feel the need to stay busy.

Misconception #2: You get to wear pajamas all day, basically doing nothing.
