Chapter One: Meri and Kody
Meri says that she grew up LDS, but her mom learned about plural marriage and suggested the family move to Utah. When Meri was five, they found themselves in Utah with their sights set on plural marriage.
Apparently the new wife left within two years and the marriage resulted in no children. When Meri was 10, another sister wife joined the family. In sum, her father would have five wives. She also says that she has 27 brothers and sisters.
Meri talks about the perks of being from her father’s legal marriage. She says she always assumed she would live in plural marriage too.
Wait, we have to hear from Kody again? So soon?
Now, Kody tells us that he too was raised with the LDS church. When he was 14, his mom explained plural marriage to him. At 19, he went on his mission to Texas for two years. He learned that the church excommunicated his parents, so they had joined a fundamentalist Mormon church. When he came home, he learned that his father had taken a second wife.
Soon, he met Meri, who we now hear from again.
Meri met Kody at church when he was a new face. She was 18 at the time and had never been courted. Meri ended up at a summer camp with Kody’s sister…
