Day 1

When I begin writing, I usually have a general idea. When I take the time to plan, I have a full outline that I created when the idea came to me. Unfortunately, that was not the case when I started my latest story. In this case, I had just a title and a word count I wanted to reach.

So, spent most of my first day planning. I wanted to publish the story on Amazon in three days, and my goal was 6,000 words. I decided to outline the story and then write 3,000 words by the end of the day.

I usually write an outline that spells out the major events of the story chapter by chapter. It usually just includes the main points I want to cover in each scene. When I’m not feeling great about a story, I move slowly. That’s what happened today, and my outline yielded about 1,000 words. It’s a totally unedited draft and it’s garbage! But it’s one step closer to something readable.

My next goal? Get 3,000 decent words on paper. So, I went back to the beginning of my outline and used the framework as a template. I expanded on each idea, turning sentences into scenes.

Once I get to 3,000 words, I usually set the story aside until the next day. Unfortunately, I only got to about 2,000 usable words by the end of the day, so that left 4,000 for day two.
