Revisiting “Flowers in the Attic”: Books Cathy & Chris Read in the Attic
Let’s get one thing straight: I don’t want to live in an attic. But when I was a kid, I did sort of think the idea was kind of cool. Think of all the books I could read, all the movies I could watch, all the media I could consume, if only I didn’t ever have to leave my home.
It makes sense that V.C. Andrews was my favorite author as a teenager.
While reading Flowers in the Attic, I really could not get enough of the minutiae of the children’s day. What were they watching on the little TV? What were they eating? And of course, what were they reading? Now, let’s get real. I didn’t want to read most of the books they read when I was a kid. But I loved the details and knowing exactly what the Dollangangers had access to in that attic.
I spent some time looking over my copy of Flowers, and I noted every mention I could find of a book or author. While it’s likely I missed a few, these are the books Cathy and Chris read in the attic.
Charles Dickens
Now, we do not know which Charles Dickens books are Chris and Cathy’s favorites, but the prologue does tell us that he is one of their favorite authors. Cathy writes that she wishes she could write like him.
