The Worst Advice I’ve Followed
I don’t know about you, but I feel like I am always running the advice I receive through a variety of filters. Do I trust the person giving the advice? Does the advice come from a genuine and well-meaning place? Does this person have experience with this issue?
I’ve received some bad advice over the years, and most of it comes with good intentions. A lot of the time, bad advice comes from fear and inexperience. Some of it comes from people not knowing me, and that’s usually been my fault for not sharing how I feel.
Not only have I received the bad advice, but sometimes I’ve followed it. The strangest thing of all? Sometimes the bad advice worked.
Bad Advice: Don’t Move Out
Moving out of my dad’s house was a big decision for me. A lot of people told me to live rent-free for as long as possible, but part of me knew that I really needed independence. I would move out for periods at a time, but I would come back because I knew had the option to do so.
There is nothing wrong with living with your family. For many people my age, rent is expensive. Buying a house seems impossible. I could not afford to continue living in the state where I was raised, so I moved away from a place I loved. But for me, I think it was too comfortable.
