1970 — The Newhall Incident, a shootout, occurs. Four California Highway Patrol officers are killed by two armed men.

1986 — Jeanne Clery is murdered in Stoughton Hall at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Her death helped pass the Clery Act, a law that would require universities to report crime statistics and to alert students of on-campus dangers.

2009 — Bernice Novack is found dead in her garage in Fort Lauderdale. Initially, her death was ruled an accident, but her son was murdered three months later, resulting in her death being ruled a homicide. Her son was the heir to a Miami Beach hotel.
