1987 — Don Henry, 16, and Kevin Ives, 17, are hit by a train in Alexander, Arkansas. Their bodies had been placed on the tracks. Initially, authorities believed the incident was an accident, but exhumation of the bodies led them to believe it may have been homicide.
1992 — The remains of a woman are found in New Buffalo, Michigan. The victim appeared to be between 65 and 75 years old, and she had been left alongside the highway with her hands severed. She was missing a set of dentures, and she had been at the scene for at least two days. Authorities believe she could have been a resident at a nursing home. Her identity remains unknown, and her case is unsolved. Some websites called her “Betty the Bag Lady.”
2002 — Michelle Knight, 21, disappears after leaving her cousin’s house. She was supposed to attend court for a child custody case. Limited resources were used by police officers to find Knight, especially as many believed she had run away voluntarily. She would not be found until 2013, when she was discovered as one of three women Ariel Castro had kidnapped.
