2008 — The Covina massacre occurs in Covina, California. Nine people are killed via gunshot or fire during a Christmas party in a home. Bruce Pardo, 45, is the perpetrator. He wore a Santa Claus suit as he attacked the family of his ex-wife. The divorce had been finalized just a week earlier.

2010 — Kimberly McLean, also known as Lori Erica Kennedy Ruff, dies by suicide. Her true identity remained unknown until 2016, as it became clear she was an identity thief in spite of having an entire family. Her husband found evidence of a falsified identity after her death.
