2008 — Lawrence (Larry) King, age 15, is shot twice at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, California. His killer is 14-year-old classmate Brandon McInerney. King had come out as gay at the age of 10, and he frequently wore feminine accessories and clothing items. McInerney’s first trial was declared a mistrial, and he was tried again with the hate crime charge dropped. In 2011, McInerney pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He received a sentence of 21 years in prison. HBO made a documentary about the case called Valentine Road.
