1998 — The U.S. Supreme Court allows Megan’s Law to continue providing information about sex offenders.
1999 — John William King, a white supremacist, is found guilty in the murder of James Byrd Jr., who was dragged behind a truck in Texas. The crime was racially motivated. Two other men were found guilty of the crime, one receiving a life sentence and another sentenced to execution. King was executed in 2019.
2001 — A driver commits vehicular homicide and assault in Isla Vista, a community next to UC Santa Barbara. Five people were killed. The driver was sentenced to 60 years in a mental health facility. In 2012, the driver was given conditional release.
