2000 — Kayla Rolland, 6 years old, is shot and killed by a classmate at Buell Elementary School in Mount Morris Township, Michigan. The boy found the gun at his uncle’s house, where drugs and guns were often available. The boy was not charged with a crime on the basis of his age. The school would ultimately close.
