1966 — Brenda Brown, 11, is abducted and murdered. Her body is discovered in Shelby, North Carolina. The murder became a cold case until 2006 when new evidence emerged.

1972 — Virginia Piper, the wife of a Minnesota investment firm CEO, is kidnapped outside her home. She was chained to a tree in Jay Cooke State Park. She was recovered after the kidnappers received a ransom payment.

1981 — Adam Walsh is killed after he is abducted from a Sears department store in Hollywood, Florida. His father, John Walsh, becomes the host of the show America’s Most Wanted. Otis Toole confessed to the murder but was never formally convicted.

1987 — Craig Chandler Price commits his first murder at the age of 13. The serial killer killed his neighbor, Rebecca Spencer.

1996 — A domestic terrorist pipe bomb attack at the Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta occurs. One person is killed by the blast, another dies of a heart attack, and 111 people are injured. Richard Jewell, a security guard, was able to clear the area of most spectators before detonation.
