1994 — Megan Kanka, 7, is murdered by her neighbor. Her death led to the introduction of Megan’s Law, which requires the location of registered sex offenders to be disclosed.

1999 — Mark Barton, a spree killer, dies by suicide before he can be taken in by police officers. He had killed 12 people and injured 13 the same day.

2008 — Melissa Brooks Batten is murdered by her estranged husband, Joseph Batten. She had taken an order of protection out against him just over a week earlier.
