1954 — New Zealand’s Parker-Hulme murder case begins in Christchurch. Honorah Parker had been killed, and the main suspects were her teenager daughter, Pauline Parker, and Pauline’s friend, Juliet Hulme. The 1994 film Heavenly Creatures is based on this story.

1980 — Suzie Bombardier is murdered. Her body is found five days later in the San Joaquin River by a fisherman. In 2017, DNA analysis would lead to the arrest of Mitchell Lynn Bacom. Bacom was an acquaintance of the family, and she had been abducted from her sister’s Antioch, California, home while babysitting. He is apparently set to stand trial.

1981 — Mark Chapman pleads guilty to the murder of John Lennon. He would receive a sentence of 20 years in prison.

2004 — Marc Dutroux is sentenced to life in prison in Belgium. He kidnapped and assaulted six girls and murdered four girls.

2012 — Mollie Olgin, 19, is murdered in Portland, Texas, in Violet Andrews Park. Olgin had been at the park with her girlfriend, Kris Chapa, 18. Both women were shot, but Chapa survived. Many believe the murder was a hate crime. David Strickland, 25, was found guilty of capital murder and aggravated sexual assault in 2016. He was sentenced to life in prison.
