1998 — Matthew Shepard is attacked and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming. He had severe head injuries and died six days later. Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney were charged with first-degree murder. The murder was motivated by anti-gay sentiment, according to prosecutors. Each man received a life sentence in prison.
