1881 — President James Garfield dies after he was shot 79 days earlier.

1934 — Bruno Hauptmann is arrested in New York after ransom money links him to the abduction and death of the Lindbergh baby. He was executed two years later.

1937 — Seven inmates try to escape from Folsom State Prison. Two escapees, a warden, and an officer died in the process. The other five escapees were executed.

1972 — The body of Jeannette De Palma, 16, is found after she was murdered in August the same year.

1995 — A 35,000-word manifesto written by the Unabomber is published in the New York Times and Washington Post.
