1888 — Two women, Liz Stride and Kate Eddowes, are murdered by Jack the Ripper in Whitechapel, London.

1952 — Gilpin County Jane Doe is found in Colorado. Her body is charred and left in the forest near Highway 119. Her identity remains unknown, as does the identity of her murderer.

1963 — Two suspected Ku Klux Klan members are arrested after the bombing of a Birmingham, Alabama, church that killed four girls.

1981 — Sandra Day O’Connor becomes the first female Supreme Court justice in the United States.
