Lately, my boyfriend and I have embarked on a journey to watch at least one episode of every old TV show available on Hulu (and there are plenty). Last night, Hulu recommended that we watch an episode of I Love Lucy called “Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her.”

Let me tell you, it took us for a ride.

The History of “Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her”

While this episode was not the first of the show to air, it was the first filmed. The episode was released in 1951. And apparently that was a time when spousal murder was hilarious.

“Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her” was filmed much like a theatrical play — no breaks or costume changes. If you watch the episode, you will see Lucy wearing layers of clothing.

While all of this sets some context for what I’m about to tell you, nothing can really prepare you for what actually happens in this episode.

Married Men Love to Murder

First, let’s absorb this dialogue that occurs when Ricky asks Lucy about the murder mystery book she is reading.

Lucy: Lets see, it was either the upstairs maid, or the butler, or the cook

Ricky: It was her husband.

Lucy: Her husband? He didn’t have any reason to do it.

Ricky: He was married wasn’t he?

Then, Ricky goes into detail about the various ways he could kill Lucy. He also takes a joke about strangling Lucy with a scarf way too far, brandishing it as she pretends to sleep. Then, they get into their separate beds and fall asleep.

But Lucy can’t give up on the idea that her husband, the man she sleeps next to, is a blood-thirsty killer, ready to kill her over a list of women and one man she thinks he is interesting in courting.

Ricky Literally Slips Lucy a Mickey

Ricky realizes Lucy thinks he’s trying to kill her, and he’s kind of just . . . annoyed? In the meantime, Lucy has been walking around wearing pots and pans as a bulletproof vest.
