I don’t really remember why I first became interested in barre. I had definitely heard about it, but I didn’t really know exactly what it was until I went to my first class. I do remember wanting to take a class because I wanted to try something new but did not think I had the patience for yoga. In fact, barre was my first ever fitness class after years of relying on running to stay fit.

If you are nervous about your first barre class, much like I was, you shouldn’t be. The class isn’t necessarily easy, but the moves will not be as intimidating as you might think. You don’t need to have any dance experience. Here’s what else you need to know:

Do Not Wear Shorts

You should always wear capri-length or full leggings. The coverage is comfortable, and this will also be helpful when the instructor comes around and adjusts your form. They will gently adjust you, and it’s for your own good.

Grippy Socks Are a Good Choice

You want to wear socks to barre, but some of the classes I have gone to now require that those socks have little grippy bits on bottom. This will keep you from sliding around.
