Why I Ditched My First Therapist
Have you ever felt like it was time to see a new therapist? The first therapist I ever saw was based on who was affordable, had a website, and responded to my email first.
At first, my therapist seemed fine. I had no expectations, but soon I started to feel like something just wasn’t clicking. Here’s why.
It Seemed Like a Bad Fit
I never felt comfortable with my first therapist. She looked at me like I was a trained dog, and I did learn later on that she was relatively inexperienced. Ultimately, I just didn’t feel comfortable explaining things to her, and I couldn’t express myself freely.
I also found out about a year after I stopped going to sessions with her that she focused her practice on divorce support. I think it may have been a better route.
She Didn’t Hear Me
I was pretty straightforward with my first therapist that I wasn’t into visualizations. Meditation won’t heal my depression. She wasn’t picking it up. Once, I talked about how little anxiety I felt that week. My therapist turned the whole session into pointing the anxiety I did feel. I left the session feeling defeated.
