If you write and work from home, this conversation might sound familiar.

“So, what is it that you do for work?”

“I’m a writer. I work from home.”

“You actually make money doing that?”

At this point, I’ve been writing for about 10 years, and I still have to explain to my family members what I do. I’ve also noticed a few other consistencies in the way people act in regards to my job.

People Are More Inclined to Ask How Much I Make

Whether people want to know if I’m really supporting myself or they are just curious about my work, I’m not sure. But it does feel like people are more comfortable asking you how much money you make when you have a job they think is out of the norm.

People Call It an “Internet Thing”

For some people, freelancing and working from home are difficult concepts to understand. No, I don’t necessarily have an employer. Yes, I can still make money. No, I don’t blog all day. No, it’s not just “typing on the Internet all day.” But I am always glad when people ask questions about my work to better understand it.
