Working from Home Does Not Mean You Don’t Have a Job

How often do you tell somebody what you do for a living, only to have them suggest new job prospects for you? When I tell people that I am a freelance writer, I think they assume I’m telling them that I am out of work. I don’t really know what that’s all about, but it happens a lot.

In the past, I would often allow people to give me suggestions. After all, they are only trying to help. They would tell me about all their friends who could probably “use somebody like me.” In some cases, I took on extra work in areas I wasn’t even interested in.

At the end of the day, I think I need to put my foot down on taking on work that doesn’t fit into my scope. I am not really a web designer, and I’m not particularly invested in being a personal assistant. In my very core, I am a writer.

Now, that does not mean I will not take on work in these areas. I enjoy helping people organize their schedules and get started on daunting projects. I like helping people. But I’m not going to go out of my way to pick these up.

For now, I’m going to write.
